Trump - Who is he?
Following his negative impact on the recent election - from the standpoint of a life-long Republican - I said I was finished with him. It is all the more clear to me today that he is a liability to my party and to the country I love.
Trump is openly attacking Ron DeSantis, a man who has governed his state better than any man or woman in recent memory. I try not to assume another person's motivation in what they say or do, but, in this case, I think it is blatantly clear. Trump wants, above all else, to be elected President in the election in two years. If Biden runs again he thinks he has a good chance of winning. But, he is concerned that he might have to face competition in the primary. And DeSantis would be formidable competition. Trump is already openly disparaging this member of his own party, someone who has never disparaged him.
I ask myself, who is Trump? He doesn't seem to think of America first. He doesn't seem to think of the Republican Party first. He seems to think of Trump first. Maybe, he is just a Trumpican!
There is a core of MAGA people who think that Trump is the last best hope for the preservation of the American way of life. In this last election there were 6 million more votes in Congressional races for Republicans than for Democrats. Trump wasn't on the ballot. In fact, in most races where he supported a candidate, they lost. It has been two years since the election that he lost. He never stopped kvetching about how he was cheated (just like Stacey Abrams). He only supported candidates who agreed with his historically irrelevant position. Many of those were not on the same page as their constituents. The majority of Republicans have moved on.
Trump should follow them or get out of the way. He cannot be elected again. It was one brief shining moment in his life. The light is out. There is one thing he can do to demonstrate that he is not just a Trumpican. The run-off election between Warnock and Walker will be pivotal to the control of the Senate. He could reach out to DeSantis and other Republican leaders to combine vocal and vigorous support for Walker. That could (along with a lot of money) be enough to get Governor DeSantis across the finish line. It would be a great day for my vision of America. And all it takes is for Trump to put his humongous ego on the side for a few short weeks. He can do it - for me, for the party, for the country. The question is whether or not he will.
We'll soon find out if there is more to the man than his ego.
